Federal jury finds Jammie Thomas-Rasset guilty of illegally downloading 24 songs and the woman has been fined to tune of $1.9 million for the same. She has to pay $80,000 per song (which she could have bought it from iTunes for paltry 99 cents).
This verdict of the jury seems more like to “set an example out of her”. To show the world what can be the consequence s of illegally downloading a copyrighted song. Yes, just downloading a song! Can you imagine how much the jury will charge a person who is actually uploading those songs? May be just few billions or gazillions!
The punishment meted out to her does not fits the crime! I think federal government should come out with a standard law for illegally downloading a song, something like a fine of $1000 for each song.
Laws should more tighter to grab the real culprits who uploads or shares the copyrighted songs. The root cause still is piracy. Just travel in New York subways and I can bet you will find at-least few people selling pirated song CDs and movie DVDs. We need to eliminate out the real cause. This case is more like punishing a drug addict for taking drugs rather than hunting for drugs sellers. Kill the root cause!!!
