AVATAR, directed and written by James Cameron, is a 3-D science fiction epic film due to be released on December 18, 2009 by 20th Century Fox. Avatar takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home.

The movie focuses on an epic conflict on a far-away world called Pandora, where humans and the native species of Pandora, the Na’vi, engage in a war over the planet’s resources and existence.Pandora is also home to the Na’vi, a sentient humanoid race, who are considered primitive, yet are more physically capable than humans. Standing three meters tall (approximately 10 feet), with tails and sparkling blue skin, the Na’vi live in harmony with their unspoiled world.

Some interesting facts about Avatar:

  • James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of “Titanic”, first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist.
  • It took more than four years of production and the movie claims to have a new generation of special effects delivering a never seen before cinematic experience.
  • According to Cameron, developers of proprietary Fusion digital 3-D camera, the film is composed of 60% computer-generated elements and 40% live action.

The director planned to create photo-realistic computer-generated characters by using motion capture animation technology. Unlike previous performance capture systems, where the digital environment is added after the actors’ motions have been captured, Cameron’s new virtual camera allows him to observe directly on a monitor how the actors’ virtual counterparts interact with the movie’s digital world in real time and adjust and direct the scenes just as if shooting live action.

Yep, greedy ol' humans raping the pristine universe, upsetting the ecological balance, opening pandora's box…sort of like a gazillion other cationary tales that sci-fi likes blather on about with an oh-so air of moral superiority. Well I guess the movie needs to have a reason to made, and why not jump on the green bandwagon, everyone loves that. Only thing missing in the trailor is the evil industrial types calling the shots behind the military, but maybe they couldn't squeeze that in…

Tiring concept for such a beautiful looking movie.

Will we ever free ourselves from the romantic paradigm?

Avatar was great, but there is another book which I think could outdo it potentially.
Usually don’t do this, but this book deserves a mention. It’s called “Pulse” by Jeremy Robinson. “Imagine a world where soldiers regenerate and continue fighting without pause, where suicide bombers live to strike again and again. This is the dream of Richard Ridley, founder of Manifold Genetics, and he has just discovered the key to eternal life: an ancient artifact buried beneath a Greek-inscribed stone in the Peruvian desert.”

Avatar was absolutely incredible. The scenery = amazing. After I watched it I was blown away to find a tv channel that believes in many of the same ideals. http://www.TheSkiChannel.com talks about the mountains and how they are meant for everyone. Preservation is important right this very minute. Great stuff on there as well and unbelievable scenery on their website.

It was at both; in the movie, Jake (in avatar form) was about to return to his human form in the avatar bunk, and he was messing with his hair and you saw the little wiggly pink things come out of his hair. However, when riding the Banshee, the Na'vi connect their tails to their Banshee.
