The Department of Commerce relinquished some of its control over the Internet’s governing body Wednesday in an agreement intended to allow more international participation in the process. Commerce and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will still maintain a relationship, but the United States will not have as much control as it has had since ICANN’s 1998 inception.
“We’ve hit our target after 11 years and we’re now mature enough to move on to the next phase of our global development,” Rod Beckstrom, chief executive of ICANN, said in a statement.

Capitalizing on this event Yahoo had put in full page ads in leading Indian news papers (couple of days back) which says that Internet is under new management and its “Yours”!
