Music Band : Popinjays were a British indie pop band active between 1988 and 1994, the majority of whose records were released on One Little Indian Records in the U.K., and Epic/One Little Indian in the U.S.
The band was formed by Wendy Robinson (vocals) and Polly Hancock (vocals, guitar), initially with a drum machine, and a girl called Emma on bass, this line-up recording the debut “Don’t Go Back” EP (released on Big Cat records in August 1988).[1] They then recruited Dana Baldinger, who replaced Emma, and signed to One Little Indian, releasing the “Perfect Dream Home” single. Dana left, to be replaced by Anne Rogers. Debut album Bang Up To Date With The Popinjays was issued in April 1990. 1991 saw further line-up changes, with Rogers replaced by ex-Airhead bassist Ben Kesteven, and a drummer, Seamus Feeney, finally replacing the drum machine, this line-up remaining until the band split up in 1994.
Sports : Popinjay or Popingo (signifying a painted bird) is a shooting sport that can be performed with either rifles or archery equipment. The rifle form is a popular diversion in Denmark; a Scottish variant is also known. The archery form is popular in Belgium and is shot occasionally in the United Kingdom under the governance of the Grand National Archery Society. In Germany a traditional shooting at wooden birds placed on an high pole is called “Vogelschießen” (that is “bird shooting”). These are being carried out either with small bore rifles or crossbows.
